Cost of Participating in Clinical Trials

Although many factors may affect individual healthcare plans, coverage for participating in clinical trials falls into two categories: patient care costs and research costs.

Patient care costs include usual care costs such as doctor visits, lab tests, x-rays, hospital admissions, etc. Costs are usually covered by a third party plan such as private insurance or Medicare. These costs occur when receiving either standard treatment or while participating in a trial.

Research costs are directly associated with the trial. Examples of those costs include data collection, tests specifically required for the trial, and research physician and nurse time. Costs are usually covered by the Sponsor of the trial. Patients should consult with the research staff at the Family Cancer to discuss costs of a specific trial.
